None of us is okay and all of us are fine. It’s not just one way. We are walking, talking paradoxes.”
– Pema Chödron, Start Where You Are
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
I’ve been feeling very ethereal and heady lately. It’s my Libra nature to be enticed by ideas over action but it’s ALSO a Libran’s nature to search for balance and harmony.
Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it, you must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it. If you don’t you will leak away your innate contentment. It’s easy enough to pray when you’re in distress but continuing to pray even when your crisis has passed is like a sealing process, helping your soul hold tight to its good attainments.
– Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love
I’m sitting outside on a beautiful cafe patio. It’s late June in LA, the weather is perfectly warm and I’m sipping on a latte. It’s 3pm and the sun is bathing the flowers just outside the shadow of my patio umbrella. Their hues of pink, yellow, red, and purple are glowing. There is low-volume, European music setting the scene.
Happy holiday week and almost June! Who else is completely in shock that its already the 6th month of the year?? *raises both hands* The speed at which the year moves never ceases to amaze me.
As we move into June, have you taken a second to check in with yourself? Check in with your goals and how you’re doing? Check in with your mental state? Check in with your intentions and how your life is structured around them? I highly suggest you take 5-10 minutes to do so.
“Pay attention to what you pay attention to.”
We all tell ourselves stories.
Day in and day out, our lives are defined by the stories going on in our heads whether we’re consciously aware of them or not. If you want to become aware of the stories you’re telling, all you have to do is look around. All of our most commonly told stories are reinforced by physical evidence. That’s because they’ve been practiced so much that they’ve become beliefs – keeping us in a holding pattern of living the same thing over and over again.
Happy Wednesday, perpetual transitioners!
Do you ever feel like you’re in a state of constant transition? That you’re on the way to something and never quite there yet? I’ve decided to name this state of being perpetual transition and I believe that the vast majority of us live there. Wanting, wishing, hoping for things that lie just outside of our reach.
I spent this past weekend in beautiful and uncharacteristically sunny, San Francisco (sunny until the last day that is, which is pictured above) for the first time. I learned a lot about the replenishing qualities of vacation. The space it provides in your mind to appreciate your life, your surroundings, your being, and so much more.
It was Sunday evening and I was energetically spent from another one of my funks that I could only attribute to cosmic attack. I intelligently decided to reach out to some friends rather than wallow in my depleted emotional state (which is my usual unhealthy course of action). My angelic friend just happened to be heading to church in 45 mins and I knew that seeing her was my best bet for salvation from my inexplicable emotional spiral.
